The history of Gin

Gin is an alcoholic drink which comes from Holland. To be more precise, Gin is a spirit, as the alcohol is obtained after distillation.

Gin appears to be one of the first spirits produced In Europe. It was first produced in the 17th Century. Originally, Gin was called Jenever which evolved to become Juniper; an alcohol considered to be the ancestor of Gin. So, Gin has its roots in both these words. It was mainly consumed in Holland and Belgium. Jenever, Juniper and Gin have one point in common, they are all made with Juniper berries.

Gin may have been first produced by a doctor called Franciscus Slyvius. The main Gin producing countries are Holland and England. The English were the main buyers of Dutch Jenever. This spirit was very popular in England, so it is logical that the first Gin distilleries developed in England after the Dutch ones.

The origin of this alcohol allows 2 great varieties of Gin to be distinguished:

  • Juniper (Dutch or Belgian Gin): Juniper is an alcohol produced by the distillation of fermented rye flour and cornflour, redistilled after adding herbs: essentially juniper berries but also coriander, fennel, cumin, liquorice, aniseed, orange peel, almonds, fresh fruit, etc.
  • London Dry Gin (English Gin): The London Dry Gin does not denote the origin of the Gin; it is more a consequence of the English regulations. In fact, English distillers do not have the right to distillate the basic grain alcohol, necessary ingredient of Gin production. They buy the rye flour and cornflour alcohol, then elaborate the Gin either by distilling the alcohol with herbs including the juniper, or by mixing the base with an alcoholate of herbs and distilled water.

Juniper can be differentiated from London Dry Gin by its more pronounced flavour. Juniper has more character than London Dry Gin which is easier to use in cocktails. London Dry Gin is more commonly drunk by the public.

Gin is a spirit which is rarely vintage.

Gin became more popular through the centuries in several European countries and throughout the world. Many countries produce Gin, notably Belgium, France, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Germany or Switzerland.  There are also Gin distilleries in Spain, particularly in the Balearic Islands. Minorca was once occupied by England who produced this famous alcohol there.

Outside of Europe, the United States and Japan are also part of the principal Gin productors. Once again, the presence of the English helped contribute to the production of Gin. A large number of western countries consume Gin.

In this reference list of the best Gins, you can find Gins from all over the world.

Top Gin in starred gastronomic restaurants

Gin is a very dry spirit which has floral and vegetable aromas due to the fermentation of the malt and the presence of junipers.

Depending on the brands and references of Gins, it may have a fruity or more spicy flavour. Each herb included in the recipe brings its own aroma. So, Gin is an alcohol which has different tastes according to its recipe and can therefore be regularly reinvented.

Gin is rarely served pure in gastronomic restaurants. However, some variants might be tasted on their own. Gin is mostly consumed as a cocktail like Gin and tonic. Some Gins served in gastronomic restaurants are flavoured. Most of the time, Gin is served as an aperitif and a cocktail. As for purists, they drink Gin on its own. Gin can be drunk as a liqueur, but it is not common practice. In some gastronomic restaurants. Gin is also used in dishes, mainly to make sauces.

For a good inexpensive Gin

My name is Gwendal, and I am a Gin lover. I do not claim to be an expert in Gin. I simply enjoy the unique flavour of this spirit. Through the different bottles of Gin I have tasted, I found that its flavour could change from one bottle to another, from one brand to another. I was lucky to taste several Gins in a starred gastronomic restaurant. From then on, I did not consider it simply as a spirit, I realised that this alcohol contained much more than floral or vegetable aromas. Advised by a sommelier, I profited from the experience of a professional of wines and spirits to discover part of the world of Gin. Since that moment, I am a passionate Gin consumer. I have several bottles of Gin in my bar, some of which are rare. Through Bestwine • Online, I would like to help the greatest number of internet users to find the best references and brands of Gins. I would also like to allow everyone to buy a good bottle of Gin at the best online price.
