The best ports on the wine list of gastronomic restaurants.

Port

Port is an alcoholic drink typical of Portugal. To be precise, Port is a fortified red wine only produced in Portugal in the Haut Douro region.

The word Port comes from the town of Porto which is originally the place where Port was produced. Port is historically about terroir and culture.

Port is still produced in small vineyards in the Douro region.

Traditionally, it is the inhabitants of each village who bring their own grapes to the wine merchants, to produce their own beverage. These productions are sometimes sold to big firms.

There are almost as many wine growers as there are acres of vineyards in the Douro. The greatest part of the production of Port comes from wine merchants or producers who mix wines that they have bought from wine merchants or wine growers. 90% of the market is detained by 200 brands of Port.

The best bottles of Port are often produced by producers who bottle their Port, have their own vineyards, and grow their own grapes. On Bestwine.Online, you will find good quality Port produced by wine merchants, producers who bottle their production, or wine shops. Obviously, you will only find Port which comes from Portugal.

Port is made with fermented grapes to which a spirit called “brandy” is added and then it is aged.

Port is exported all over the world. The country which consumes the most Port is not Portugal, but England. Historically Port is an alcohol linked to Britain because the majority of the owners of big Port firms were British.

Choosing a good Port

Without any knowledge of Port, it can be difficult to select a good quality brand or bottle, so it is important to know that there are different types and categories of Port.

There are 4 different types of Port:

  • Ruby or Red Port: Ruby Port is exclusively made with red grapes. It’s distinguishing feature is that it is aged in the bottle. It is the Port with the greatest production
  • Tawny Port: Tawny Port is only made with red grapes. It is a mixture of vintages. Tawny Port is aged in barrels and then left to oxidize through contact with the air. It has a characteristic brown even red colour. Tawny Port has aromas of almond, nut, wood, coffee, or chocolate depending on the production.
  • White Port: White Port is exclusively made with white grapes. It is aged and oxidized in contact with the air which gives it a golden colour. White Port has fresh aromas.
  • Rosé Port: Rosé Port is made with red grapes. It is thanks to the fermentation stage like White Port, that the rosé colour is obtained. The first creations by the Croft firm date back to 2008 for a marketing stunt on Valentines Day. The creation was officially declared as a type of Port in its own right in 2009.

Port is an alcohol that needs to be consumed rapidly. The term for this type of Port is oxidized Port or reduced Port. Reduced Port has not been aged in contact with the air for very long. Reduced Port have unusual fruity aromas such as plums or blackberries.

There are several types of vintage Port, as the quality of the alcohol produced can differ according to the year, notably for Ruby Port (LBV Bottled Vintage, Single Quinta Vintage, Vintage) and Tawny (Reserve or Reserva, Colheita). The influence of the climate can also contribute to the production of the best Port vintages.

Port is more and more popular in starred gastronomic restaurants as the quality of the different productions of Port improve with time. Most of the time, Port is consumed as an aperitif. It is traditionally served neat and at room temperature.
