Rosé Champagne and its characteristics
Rosé Champagne comes exclusively from France. In fact, Champagne is an alcohol protected by a controlled designation of origin. (AOC). So, its origins are exclusively in the Champagne region in the North-East of France. Rosé Champagne is a Champagne which may be pink, orange or copper coloured which makes it unique. Champagne was invented by the Ruinart company in 1764. It was originally called “the partridge’s eye” which refers to the red colour surrounding a partridge’s eye, and which can be compared to a bubble of sparkling Champagne. Logically, Pink Ruinart Champagne is one of the unconditional references on the wine list of gastronomic restaurants.
The elaboration of more Rosé Champagnes by other great names in Champagne helped to add other references to the list. In 1818 the firm Veuve Cliquot managed by Madame Cliquot invented the first known Rosé Champagne by mixing red wine and white wine. This combination of red and white wine has given Rosé Champagne its atypical colour. During the 19th Century this method of production consisting of mixing red and white wine to produce Pink Champagne became popular in the Champagne vineyards.
Two categories of Rosé Champagne can be distinguished:
- Assembled Rosé Champagne (Champagne Rosé d’assemblage): obtained by mixing the must of white grapes with black grapes. The result of this mixture is then enriched with a small proportion of red wine. It is interesting to note that Rosé Champagne is the only French wine to benefit from a mixture of white grapes with black grapes. On the palate, assembled Rosé Champagne has light aromas and an orange robe.
- Macerated Rosé Champagne (Champagne Rosé de saignée): obtained by macerating black skinned or grey grapes. Black or grey skinned grapes come from the Pinot-Noir, Pinot-Meunier or Pinot-Gris. This maceration with back and grey skinned grapes gives an intense Rosé coloured robe. The colour of the Macerated Rosé Champagne is naturally obtained through only one type of grape. Macerated Rosé Champagne has a more pronounced aroma.
Macerated Rosé Champagne has more flavour and character than Assembled Rosé Champagne. This is due to the fact that its juice comes from only one grape like ordinary Rosé Wine. This method of production for Macerated Rosé Champagne is less common in the Champagne growing areas than the method for Assembled Rosé Champagne
Pink Champagne and Champagne became popular at the end of 20th Century. As for Rosé Champagne, it regained in popularity with consumers in 2000 becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Britain, The United States and Japan are the biggest consumers of Pink Champagne. In 2020 it represented more than 10% of export in the world. Since the 70s the increase in sales for Rosé Champagne is significant; as it only represented 2.5% of export in 1977, 4.8% in 2004, 5.6% in 2005 and 9% in 2012. An excellent festive drink, Rosé Champagne appeals most of all to women.
Pink Champagne may be served as an aperitif. Its fruity flavour and its pink colour make it a valued aperitif in restaurants. The same qualities also make it an excellent drink to be served with deserts. Champagne goes particularly well with sweet deserts made with red fruit.
